Simplified mileage expense for these miles
100 miles × 55p = £55.00
This is an allowable expense figure, not a cash refund
The simplified mileage amount can be used when working out eligible self-employed business expenses. It replaces the vehicle running costs covered by the flat-rate method for that vehicle.

HMRC mileage rates for 2026/27
The approved first-10,000-mile rate for cars and vans increased to 55p from 6 April 2026. The previous 45p rate still matters for claims relating to 2025/26.

Which mileage calculation should you use?
The rate can look the same, but the tax treatment is different depending on whether you are self-employed or using your own vehicle as an employee or company director.
Self-employed: simplified vehicle expenses
Sole traders and qualifying partnerships can choose to use simplified mileage expenses instead of working out the actual running costs for an eligible vehicle. For 2026/27, cars and goods vehicles use 55p per business mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p after that. Motorcycles use 24p per mile.
The amount produced by the calculator is an allowable expense figure used when working out taxable business profit. It is not a cash payment from HMRC. Limited companies cannot use the self-employed simplified-expenses scheme.

Employees and company directors using their own vehicle
HMRC's Approved Mileage Allowance Payments rules let employers reimburse qualifying business mileage in an employee's own vehicle up to the approved amount. Cars and vans use the same 55p/25p tax rates in 2026/27, motorcycles use 24p and bicycles use 20p.
If your employer pays less than the approved amount, the shortfall can create Mileage Allowance Relief. The relief is a tax deduction on that shortfall, so the amount you actually save depends on your tax position.
The 55p rate for cars and vans applies only to the first 10,000 qualifying business miles in the tax year. If you are already at 9,800 miles and enter another 500, this calculator applies 55p to the next 200 miles and 25p to the remaining 300.
What counts as business mileage?
Business mileage is not simply every mile driven while you are working. The journey must qualify under the relevant tax rules.
Employees
Ordinary commuting between home and a permanent workplace does not normally qualify for tax relief. Travel to a temporary workplace or travel that is necessary in the performance of the job can be treated differently.
Self-employed people
GOV.UK says self-employed people cannot claim non-business driving or ordinary travel between home and work. The position can be more complicated for itinerant businesses and people who work at multiple temporary locations, so check HMRC guidance if the journey is not straightforward.

Passenger payments, electric vehicles and other details
Passenger payments
For employees using a car or van, an employer can pay an additional 5p per passenger per business mile for carrying fellow employees on qualifying work journeys. There is no Mileage Allowance Relief if the employer pays less than that passenger rate or pays nothing, so the calculator deliberately does not add unpaid passenger allowance to your relief figure.
Electric and hybrid vehicles
HMRC's employee mileage rules put electric and hybrid cars and vans in the same car-and-van category. Qualifying electrically assisted pedal cycles use the cycle rate; other electric bikes can fall under the motorcycle rules.
Company cars are different
This calculator is for business mileage in a vehicle you personally own or otherwise use within the approved mileage schemes. Company-car fuel and electricity reimbursement uses different rules and rates, so it is outside this calculator's scope.

UK mileage calculator questions
What is the HMRC mileage rate for 2026/27?
For cars and vans, the tax-approved rate is 55p per business mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year, then 25p per mile. Motorcycles use 24p per mile and employee bicycle mileage uses 20p per mile.
Was the car mileage rate 45p before 2026/27?
Yes. For 2025/26 and earlier years covered by the previous rate, cars and vans used 45p for the first 10,000 business miles and 25p after that. The calculator includes a 2025/26 option for older claims.
Can a sole trader claim 55p per mile?
Eligible sole traders can use the simplified vehicle-expense method for qualifying business mileage. For 2026/27, eligible cars and goods vehicles use 55p for the first 10,000 business miles and 25p thereafter. The simplified-expenses scheme has eligibility rules, so check GOV.UK if you have previously claimed vehicle costs or capital allowances.
Can a limited company use simplified mileage expenses?
No. The self-employed simplified-expenses scheme is for sole traders and qualifying partnerships, not limited companies. A director using their own vehicle for company business may instead fall under the employee Approved Mileage Allowance Payments rules.
What is Mileage Allowance Relief?
If an employee uses their own vehicle for qualifying business travel and the employer pays less than HMRC's approved amount, the difference can create Mileage Allowance Relief. Relief is given through tax, so a £500 shortfall does not mean HMRC simply pays £500 in cash.
Does normal commuting count as business mileage?
Usually not. For employees, travel between home and a permanent workplace is generally ordinary commuting. Self-employed people also cannot normally claim ordinary travel between home and work. Some temporary-workplace and itinerant-working situations are more complex.
Do I need to keep a mileage log?
Keep records of qualifying business journeys and mileage. HMRC guidance for employee mileage-relief claims says mileage logs should record the reason for each journey and the start and end postcodes.
Does this calculate company-car fuel rates?
No. Company-car fuel or electricity reimbursement uses separate rules. This calculator focuses on approved mileage payments for an employee's own vehicle and simplified mileage expenses for eligible self-employed users.
